Functional outcome of the bladder following lumbar surgery for cauda equina syndrome: a case series
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Objectives. This study examines bladder function recovery following surgical intervention for cauda equina syndrome (CES) and its impact on quality of life in a lifestyle medicine context. Material and methods. Conducted at Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College, the study followed CES patients for 12 months post-surgery, assessing surgical timing, preoperative perianal sensation, voluntary anal contraction (VAC), and bladder function recovery. Outcomes. Despite the belief that early decompression is crucial for neurological recovery, all patients in this study regained full bladder function regardless of surgical timing, leading to improved quality of life. Conclusions. These findings highlight the importance of multidisciplinary care involving neurologists, rheumatologists, and surgeons. The study also emphasizes rehabilitation, lifestyle modifications, and neuroplasticity-based interventions in CES recovery. Expanding treatment beyond a neurosurgical approach can enhance functional outcomes and patient well-being..
