Bridging the Generational Technology Divide in Counseling Training, Practice, and Supervision

Year: 2025
Type: other
Abstract: New terms have emerged to describe different generations' connections with technology. The term for Generation Xers and baby boomers is digital immigrant , which refers to someone who was born or brought up before the widespread use of technology. This chapter explores the generational digital divide and its impact on the counseling profession; in particular, on how counseling professors and supervising professionals are adapting to training the millennial and post-millennial generations of counselors. Although using technology in the classroom and training programs is an accepted part of the counseling profession, using it to provide counseling services in practice settings receives a great deal of attention from state licensing boards and other regulatory organizations. Supervision is an essential component of training of future counselors in degree programs as well as in postdegree counseling experiences.
