Abstract: Workplace diversity would appear to have a rather short history as a field in organization studies if its emergence were located only within contemporary scholarship. Issues that commonly fall within the study of workplace diversity have always existed. This entry gives a brief history and review of the scholarship on workplace diversity, outlining key debates around defining diversity and adjacent concerns, and identifying different theoretical trajectories (such as social identity theory and organizational demography) and critical perspectives. It goes on to offer a glimpse into the continuing challenges and possible future directions indicated by the literature.
