Abstract: Kateřina Tučková’s Boginie z Žítkovej(Žítkovské bohyně, 2012) and Ignacy Karpowicz’s Sońka (2014), despite their different accents, tell the story of witches – goddesses, whisperers, quacks, herbalists. Comparing the two novels, I look at the creations of female heroines as unique characters because of the abilities they possess or are attributed to them. I ask how the stories of their lifes were presented and whether they were written into a broader, not only feminocentric, context. That is the function of the places in which the stories of the heroines are set, especially the Surmena from Žítkova on Moravian Slovakia (MoravianSlovak border) and Sońka from Królowe Stołjo in the Polish-Belarusian Podlasie. What do the characters of the „guardians of the fairy tail” – Dora and Igor – serve? Referring to the insights of Mona Chollet and Silvia Federici, I finally try to determine the subversive potential of the story of modern witches – do they implement the postulates of feminists, not just of the second wave?
