Abstract: Dear Sir, We have read with keen interest, an article published in an esteemed journal, the Medical Journal of Dr. D Y Patil Vidyapeeth, that could be cited as Senapati, Bighneswar; Das, Bharati; Pradhan, Sarbeswar; Swain, Arakhita; Jaiswal, Aryan; Mohakud, Nirmal Kumar. A Hospital-Based Prospective Study of Sickle Cell Disease in Children of Eastern India. Medical Journal of Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth 16(5):p. 731-735, Sep–Oct 2023. DOI: 10.4103/mjdrdypu.mjdrdypu_796_21. We would like to congratulate all authors for such a well-designed study taking into account the clinical examinations, hematological tests as well as biochemical tests of the children participating in the study. Hemoglobin HPLC or High-Performance Liquid Chromatography is one of the tests of choice today for screening all hemoglobinopathies. The correct estimate of HbA2 and HbF along with an HbS peak can be identified with its help.[1] This test was not used in the present study, which should also be taken into account. The discussion section contains the information that MCH concentration in SBT (Sickle beta thalassemia) was found to be low compared to SCA (Sickle cell anaemia), but the respective table to reveal this was nowhere found in the study. Also, the history of patients undergoing blood transfusion was not mentioned in the study.[2] The short forms like SSA and SSD were written whose full forms were not mentioned anywhere in the paper, which we think must be a typographical error. The above study still needs appreciation as the values presented in the study are reflective of cases being encountered in eastern India. The clinical manifestations of SCA and SBT are very well documented in tabular form. Data availability statement Data sharing is not applicable to this article as no datasets were generated and/or analyzed during the current study.
