Is the limbus patrum Theory Necessary for Christian Eschatology? An Attempt to Answer the Question

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The concept of limbus patrum is well-established in the tradition of Christian theology. It originated in antiquity as an answer to the question about the fate of those who are called „the righteous of the Old Testament.” It is also present in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. However, one may ask whether this theory is necessary for Christian soteriology and eschatology today. This article attempts to answer that question. It is divided into three parts. Part one briefly summarizes how the limbus patrum theory was understood in traditional Catholic doctrine. Part two formulates some critical questions about the traditional understanding of this theory. Part three attempts to answer the fundamental question and proposes how it should be understood that the righteous men and women of the Old Testament were saved by the blood of Jesus Christ’s cross.
