Evaluation of penetration depth and color stability of experimental infiltrants on surface lesion in human enamel

Type: article
Abstract: Background: This study evaluated the chemical properties of different experimental infiltrants. Materials and Methods: The blocks were submitted to simulation of superficial lesion in demineralizing solution (pH=4.5). The specimens were divided into groups for infiltrants application: IC (Icon®), E (Experimental); ED (Experimental + 0.5% DFI), EH (Experimental + 10% HEMA), EHD (Experimental + 10% HEMA + 0.5% DFI); EEt (Experimental + 10% Ethanol) e EEtD (Experimental + 10% Ethanol + 0.5% DFI). The specimens infiltrated were submitted to penetration depth (PD) and color stability (CS). For the evaluation of degree conversion (DC) the specimens of infiltrants materials were prepared. Data were analyzed by generalized linear models (p=0.05). Results: For CS, all pigmented groups when submitted to coffee and red wine, however in coffee there was no statistical difference, and the IC, when pigmented with red wine, showed the greatest color change (p <0.05). Additionally, the IC group had the lowest DC, differing statistically from the other groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The experimental infiltrants showed characteristics similar to the commercial infiltrant Icon®, and the association in its composition of Ethanol with DFI improved the degree of conversion of the material. Clinical significance: Low viscosity resins, also called infiltrants, may be a viable alternative to masking surface and white spot lesions as they may pigment less than other direct restorative materials.
