Mulheres Negras no Jongo
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article analyses cultural expressions from Afro-Brazilian perspectives, such as Jongo, from the viewpoint of Black women and their resistance to patriarchy. The aim is to understand how these cultural expressions are preserved by the work of popular masters through informal education. The purpose of this analysis is to explore how these cultural expressions reflect the worldview, or cosmogony, of Afro-Brazilian communities, and the roles of popular masters in preserving both the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the state of São Paulo. Some key characteristics of the Afro-Brazilian perspective can be highlighted from the outset: the strong presence of the Black family in informal education, a sense of brotherhood or solidarity, resistance to modernity and coloniality, political action carried out creatively and always linked to the cultural processes of these communities – a form of “intelligent resistance” – as well as a harmonious relationship with nature that offers valuable lessons in ecology.
