Penile reconstruction due to gunshot injury: case report

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Introduction: Genital traumas have become more frequent in large cities, especially penetrating traumas, due to the increase in urban crime. Men between 14 and 48 years of age are the most affected, with gunshot wounds being the predominant type. These traumas can often involve the penis and scrotum, and penile reconstruction is a possible surgical treatment. Methodology: This is an exploratory case report with daily patient monitoring, photographic records, and review of hospital records. All of these procedures were performed with the patient's permission. Case report: A 42-year-old man was the victim of a gunshot accident that resulted in severe injuries to the penis, buttocks, thigh, and scrotum. After a surgical approach with urethral reconstruction and orchiectomy, he recovered well with diuresis and erection 1 month after surgery and was discharged without complaints. Discussion: Despite the increase in genital traumas caused by firearms, there are still few studies on these conditions. Prompt diagnosis is crucial to avoid physical and psychological complications, requiring knowledge of genitourinary injuries and their classifications. Surgical intervention aims to preserve function and aesthetics, with various reconstruction techniques. Conclusion: This case presents success in penile reconstruction and preservation of urinary and sexual function until discharge. Although unique and with little statistically significant scientific evidence, this report can guide future cases, highlighting the importance of appropriate clinical and surgical management, and it is necessary to seek scientific evidence to ensure better results of these practices in the long term.
