Applications of Biodiesel Producing Microalgae

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Microalgae are a diverse group of photosynthetic organisms that can produce a variety of valuable products, including biodiesel. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel that can be used in place of petroleum diesel in vehicles. It is a type of diesel that is produced from microalgae that contain high levels of unsaturated fatty acids. There are a number of potential applications for biodiesel producing microalgae. One application is the production of biodiesel for use in transportation. Biodiesel can be used in unmodified diesel engines, and it has been shown to have similar performance to petroleum diesel. Biodiesel can also be used in blends with petroleum diesel, which can help to reduce the environmental impact of transportation. Another potential application for biodiesel producing microalgae is the production of biobased chemicals. Microalgae can be used to produce a variety of biobased chemicals, including lubricants, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Biodiesel producing microalgae can be particularly well-suited for the production of biobased chemicals that require high levels of unsaturated fatty acids. The cultivation of biodiesel producing microalgae can also be used to sequester carbon dioxide. Microalgae absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis. This can help to mitigate the effects of climate change. The potential applications of biodiesel producing microalgae are numerous. As research in this area continues, it is likely that we will see even more innovative and sustainable applications for these organisms in the future.
