Mass transfer of acoustic cavitation bubbles in multi-bubble environment

Abstract: The mass transfer around acoustic cavitation in a multi-bubble environment is studied numerically. To model the multi-bubble environment, several bubbles are placed at the vertices of polyhedron and one bubble is placed at the center, and then an ultrasonic pressure wave with the frequency of 20 kHz is imposed along the simulation boundary box. In this study, the mass transfer of chemical species, which are initially only in the bubble, is investigated. The numerical simulation found that the mass transfer to the bubble outside is enhanced due to the bubble translational motion caused by the secondary Bjerknes force, while the mass transfer to the bubble outside increases during the bubble compression period, and the mass transfer is to the bubble inside during the bubble expansion period. In addition, the mass transfer to the bubble outside is enhanced especially for the non-spherical bubble motion during the bubble compression period. The mass transfer to the bubble outside increases with the denser bubble arrangement, and it can be explained in terms of the cover ratio, which is defined as the ratio of the projected area of the surrounding bubbles to the central bubble.
