Magnetic compression anastomosis in Roux-en-Y reconstruction: insights from a rat gastrectomy model

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y reconstruction (TG-RY) is a recommended but complex and time-consuming surgical approach for advanced gastric cancer and is associated with significant complication risks. This study used a rat model to investigate the feasibility and safety of magnetic compression anastomosis (MCA), an effective technique for digestive reconstruction in the context of TG-RY. Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to TG-RY, with the experimental group receiving MCA and the control group undergoing hand-sewn anastomosis. Surgical procedures were meticulously recorded, with evaluations conducted at 10 and 30 days postoperatively for anastomoses, survival rates, weight gain, and complications. The duration for Roux-en-Y reconstruction was significantly shorter in the experimental group (24.8 ± 3.8 min) than in the control group (47.1 ± 5.1 min, P < 0.001). The experimental group had a 100 % survival rate without complications, whereas the control group experienced leakage and hemorrhage in one case each, leading to mortality within 4 days. The experimental group demonstrated a higher burst pressure on postoperative day 10, a smoother anastomotic appearance, fewer adhesions, and better histological alignment of tissue layers. Conclusions: MCA is safe, feasible, and effective for TG-RY in rat models, with better postoperative outcomes than hand-sewn anastomosis. MCA is safe, feasible, and effective for TG-RY in rat models, with better postoperative outcomes than hand-sewn anastomosis.
