Abstract: Dar es Salaam, the business hub in Tanzania, has witnessed rapid urbanisation in recent years due to several factors. Partly, urbanisation has taken place in isolation of preserving the city’s historic environment. The case study method was used in conducting this research in the central business district of Dar es Salaam, whereby information was gathered from government agencies, various stakeholders and local communities through interviews, observations, archives and online publications. This paper discusses integrating architectural heritage within contemporary urbanisation settings for more effective sustainability.
