A Comparative Study of Pharmacotherapy versus Psychotherapy in Treating Major Depressive Disorder

Year: 2025

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study investigates the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy in treating Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) among mental health professionals in Punjab, Pakistan. A quantitative research design was used to collect and analyze numerical data through a self-administered questionnaire distributed to 133 mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and psychotherapists. Data analysis included correlation, regression, and ANOVA techniques to examine treatment effectiveness and influential factors. Correlation analysis showed a moderate to strong positive relationship between pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy effectiveness (r = 0.65) and their combination (r = 0.75). Regression analysis identified combination therapy as the strongest predictor of improved treatment outcomes (B = 0.60, p = 0.000), followed by pharmacotherapy (B = 0.55, p = 0.000) and psychotherapy (B = 0.45, p = 0.000). The severity of MDD negatively impacted treatment efficacy (B = -0.25, p = 0.003), whereas years of experience had a small but significant positive influence (B = 0.15, p = 0.014). The findings support previous research advocating for an integrated treatment approach. Future studies should explore cultural and socioeconomic factors affecting treatment choices and long-term patient outcomes.
