Effect of sulfate-reducing bacteria on crevice corrosion of 316L stainless steel
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The growth characteristics of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in crevice and their impact on corrosion were investigated. The results demonstrate that SRB growth can be categorized into three stages. The crevice blocks the diffusion of nutrients, and SRB acquire electrons from the stainless steel matrix to fulfill metabolic requirements, resulting in the formation of a bio-cathode that promotes preferential vertical development of pits.
