Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In this paper, we focus on analyzing the various ways in which the new scribes in the town of Murcia entered the guild during the 14th and 15th centuries. The genesis of the guild is rooted in a privilege granted by King Alfonso X, similar to the one bestowed upon to Sevilla. Throughout the Late Middle Ages, gaining access to a public notary, be it municipal or royal, was a significant objective for the distinguished families of the city. The system of election of the new scribes, the requirements demanded, the process of renounce and the exams taken by the candidates in order to prove their capacity are topics here exposed through the study of a combination of municipal sources, such as the Chapter Acts, and the royal sources.
