Analog Radio-Over-Fiber Transmitter with Optical Frequency Upconversion and Optimized Optical Carrier-to-Signal Ratio
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The performance of an analog radio-over-fiber (A-RoF) transmitter with optical frequency conversion (OFC) is assessed both analytically and experimentally. It comprises a cascade of two push-pull Mach-Zehnder modulators (PP-MZM), one for the data modulation at an intermediate frequency (IF) and another, driven by a local oscillator (LO) tone and biased at the null transmission point (NP), for the OFC. Results of both pure radio frequency (RF) tones and 5G NR data transmission into FR1 and FR2 bands with both QPSK and 16-QAM formats up to 355 Mbps data rate, confirm enhanced tolerance to chromatic dispersion (CD) fading as compared to conventional dual sided-band with carrier (DSB-C) A-RoF transmitters, and improved error vector magnitude (EVM) values by close to NP biasing of the data MZM. Successful transmission of 16-QAM 200 Mbps 5G NR data through 6 km fiber plus 1 m wireless path at 28 GHz with a times 4 LO multiplication factor has been achieved through overmodulation of the OFC MZM.
