Internal friction-induced heat generation in magnetorheological fluids under shear mode

Type: article
Abstract: Magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) can be freely transformed between solid and liquid with the regulation of the magnetic field, resulting in many smart applications, i.e., dampers for automobile. However, the inevitably generated heat during operation seriously affects the performance. To investigate the mechanism and influencing factors, microscopic numerical simulations are performed and an internal frictional heat generation model is developed. The heat generation is mainly due to the internal friction, including the friction between magnetic particles themselves and between particles and drive walls. The heat generation power is positively correlated with magnetic field strength, particle volume fraction, and shear rate, while negatively correlated with particle size. Moreover, the addition of magnetic nanoparticles can significantly inhibit heat generation.
