Abstract: Plasmodiasisisanillness caused by intracellular protozoan parasites thataffectsbothhumansandotheranimalsandisspread by infectedfemale anopheles mosquitobites.Plasmodiumfalciparumismostly responsibleforsevere illness. EvidencehasestablishedthatNigeriahasthehighestrateofmalariacasesinAfrica, makingitthe country mostat dangeroffailing tomeettheobjectivefortheMillenniumDevelopmentGoals. In the liver, transferase areproteins that speed upchemical reactions in thebody which are affected by infections. This study was aimed at the evaluationoftransferaseenzymeinpatients withplasmodiasisin Rivers StateTeaching Hospital. It wasacrosssectionalstudywherethesubjectswererandomlyselected.Thestudywascarried outamongpatientsattendingRiversStateUniversity TeachingHospitalinPortHarcourt,Rivers State.Onehundredandfifty(150)subjectswereincludedinthisstudy.Sixty-eight(68) subjectshadmalariaandwereregardedastestgroupwhileSixty-eightothershadnomalariawere regarded as thecontrolgroup. Blood samples were collected for malaria parasites using thick film diagnostic method while ALP, ALT, AST and GGT were collected in heparin bottle using standard procedure to analyze them.Theresultsreportedinthisstudy showedsomesignificantincreasesinactivitiesenzymesaspartate transaminase(AST),alaninetransaminase(ALT),andalkalinephosphatase(ALP)amongpatients infectedwith plasmodiasis as compared to that ofthecontrol subjects were all significant as P < 0.05 except ALT which P value is 0.478.Our reportalsoshowedthatthere wasa significantelevationof theALPenzymesonthoseof the infectedindividualswithPlasmodiasiswhencomparedtothenon-infectedindividualsinbothmale andfemalesubjects which was significant as P < 0.05.Conclusively, the studyshowedthatPlasmodiasiselevates ALPlevelsinthebody andthiscan resulttoabone disorderor intrinsic liver diseasesand we hereby recommendedthatfurtherresearch shouldbe carriedoutonthe activitiesof Plasmodiasis, itstreatmentandroutine diagnosis in relation to transferase enzyme.
