Sprechende Namen in den Kinder- und Hausmärchen und ihre tschechischen Äquivalente

Abstract: The study focuses on the translation of speaking names in the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm into Czech. Speaking names are used to characterize literary characters based on their physical traits, psychological attributes, or activities. They are most commonly found in children’s literature, particularly in fairy tales, which makes it essential to replace them with appropriate, semantically transparent equivalents in the target language. This analysis examines how these names were translated by Jitka Fučíková and Helena Helceletová, who rendered all 200 Brothers Grimm fairy tales into Czech. The correspondence between the original name and its Czech translation is evaluated primarily in terms of naming motives, followed by denotation, connotation and formalaesthetic equivalence.
