Testing the Boundaries of ACI 318-19: Development Length Provisions for Grade 60 and 80 Reinforcing Bars

Abstract: This paper evaluates the provisions of ACI 318-19 regarding the development length of tension reinforcement bars, focusing on Grade 60 and 80 steel bars. The development length, crucial for ensuring the full tensile strength of a reinforcing bar within a structural member, is the minimum embedded length required to create a strong bond between the steel and the concrete. This bond ensures that the structure remains stable under high loads without slippage of the reinforcement. In reinforced concrete, proper development length is necessary to transfer stress between adjoining sections, such as beam-column joints. The ACI 318-19 formula for development length takes into account key parameters such as the compressive strength of concrete, yield strength of the bar, and bar diameter. This study aims to test whether these provisions are sufficient for local materials and construction practices. The experiment involved casting concrete cylinders using locally sourced materials, targeting a concrete strength of 4000 psi. Four different bar diameters (#3, #4, #5, and #6) were tested using two yield strengths: 60 Ksi and 80 Ksi. After casting, the concrete samples were cured for 28 days before conducting a series of pullout tests using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM). The pullout test measures the bond stress and determines whether the bars yield or slip out of the concrete. Results showed that for all bar sizes tested with Grade 60 steel, the development lengths prescribed by ACI 318-19 were sufficient. All bars yielded without significant slippage, indicating adequate bond strength between the concrete and steel. Additionally, it was found that bond stress decreases as the diameter of the bar increases, due to the larger bond area. However, for Grade 80 bars, due to the limitations in sample size and testing facilities, only preliminary tests were conducted. The experiment highlighted the need for further testing with appropriate sample sizes for Grade 80 steel. The study concludes that the ACI 318-19 provisions provide safe and reliable development lengths for Grade 60 bars. These results are applicable to standard construction practices, and the materials used in the experiment are readily available in the local market. However, further investigation is required for Grade 80 bars to ensure the adequacy of ACI 318-19 guidelines in those cases.
