Anion Exchange Properties of β-FeOOH

Abstract: Ion exchange processes within the hollandite structural tunnels of β-FeOOH are very slow. Chloride ion is specifically adsorbed and stabilizes the crystal lattice. Consequently, it is not possible to reduce the chloride content of synthetic β-FeOOH to less than ~2 %; the chloride-free nature of a product described in the literature is doubtful.
