Development of triple-diode based generalized model of photovoltaic module

Abstract: The growing large-scale penetration of solar power plants into electric grids mandates accurate modeling of the photovoltaic modules with consideration of varying environmental conditions. Hence, this has become an important research field, resulting in the development of a large variety of models at PV cell, module and array levels.A generalized triple-diode based equivalent circuit model has been proposed in this paper and implemented on MATLAB/Simulink software. This model has the flexibility of representing double and single-diode models also, along with the possibility of including more (or lesser) number of design parameters, by considering (or neglecting) the effect of recombination and diffusion losses. It also permits by including corresponding values of band gap energy for designing modules with different materials. Thus, this generalized model facilitates the implementation of nine different models. These can be configured through a customized dialog box designed particularly for setting the desired values of energy band gap, series and shunt resistances, and ideality factor. In order to validate the proposed model, Kyocera KC-200GT, commercial PV module has been simulated and validated by comparison with the most widely referred practical models, available in the published literature. The results indicate that the performance of all variants of the proposed model are at least in close agreement or better than other referred models, when compared at remarkable points with the manufacturer data sheets under standard test conditions. The modeling errors in the simulated sub-models range from 0.2 to 7.31%, depending upon the type of model.
