Abstract: This paper delves into the exploration of the five Mettā principles depicted in the Pāļi Canon and commentaries concerning the foundation of Mettā development. The primary focus is how these principles serve as the cornerstone for cultivating Mettā or loving-kindness. The study thoroughly examines how the Pāļi Canon and commentaries portray these principles and their significance in the process of Mettā development. Through analyzing these primary sources, this study aims to deepen our understanding of the foundational aspects of Mettā cultivation within the Theravāda Buddhist tradition. The research findings shed light on the five essential Mettā principles – Sīla (Morality), Saddhā (Faith), Vīriya (Effort), Sati (Mindfulness), and Paññā (Understanding) – which are crucial for the effective development of Mettā. This study further explores these five Mettā principles depicted in the Pāļi Canon and commentaries.
