Production of Paddy Straw Biochar for Amelioration of Coastal Saline Sandy Soil
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Paddy straw waste was pyrolyzed to produce biochar with a portable low-cost rotatable drum kiln and its efficacy to ameliorate salinity limitations in coastal sandy soils collected from Puri, Odisha was studied through completely random design (CRD) pot experiments. Four levels of salinity were maintained in experimental pots using different quantities of coastal seawater i.e. 0 (control), 5 (moderate), 10 (severe), and 20 (extremely severe) PSU. Triplicate biochar treatment doses (wt/wt basis) i.e. 0.5%, 1%, and 2 % were applied to experimental pots and 14 days mung bean (Vigna radiata var. NVL-516) plant germination, growth, and physiological (Total Chlorophyll) parameters were studied to evaluate the ameliorating influence of biochar. The experimental results suggest a better influence of 1% biochar treatment towards overall mung plant growth and available nutrient content in moderate i.e., 5PSU salinity level by alleviating the effect of salt stress with an increase in biochar dose and salinity level beyond 5 PSU, the positive influence of biochar was decreased. Compared to untreated soil, biochar ameliorated the physicochemical properties of tested coastal saline sandy soil.
