Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Objective: the aim of the present study was to gather information the prevalence of periodontal disease among patients with advanced and mild chronic kidney disease (CKD) in our region and to make a comparison of their periodontal status. Results: the comparison of the mean periodontal disease parameters inclusive of plaque and gingival index, gingival recession, pocket probing death and clinical attachment level were seen to be statistically significant (p value < 0.05) in both groups. Comparison of mild and severe periodontitis in both groups was also found to be statistically significant. Moderate periodontitis was more prevalent in patients diagnosed with CKD stage 2 and 3, whereas mild and severe periodontitis was noticed to be the highest in CKD stage 4/5 patients. Conclusion: As the degree of kidney disease progresses, the severity of periodontal disease also increases. Hence, it is of utmost importance that patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease are in regular follow-up with their dental practitioners, so as to prevent the onset and progression of periodontal diseases.
