Trans-oral Submandibular Sialolithotomy for Proximal Ductal and Intra Glandular Megaliths - A Case Report

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Sialolithiasis refers to the formation of stones / calcification in the salivary glands or in their ductal systems leading to obstruction of salivary outflow. This leads to salivary stasis and an array of clinical signs and symptoms, which eventually lead to recurrent episodes of sialadenitis. Although smaller salivary stones are fairly common in clinical occurrence. Stones larger than 15mm, referred to as gaint salivary stones or megaliths are extremely rare. In addition to the size, the location, and number of stones also dictate the complexity of the surgical procedure required for their removal. The aim of these case report is to report our experience with a case of two salivary megaliths located in the proximal portion of the duct & intraglandular region that were treated with a strict trans oral submandibular sialolithotomy. The symptomatology, investigations & factors to be considered in surgical decision-making regarding the approach are discussed.
