MIMO-Assisted Wake-up Radio in a Single-Cell IoT Network

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) often involves battery-powered devices placed in hard-to-reach locations, making energy efficiency crucial for extending battery life. Among the solutions being explored, RF wake-up radio (WuR) has emerged as a promising approach, mainly studied in Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) systems. In the context of IoT cellular network, recent research has investigated the benefits of multiple antennas at the base station, which improves WuR performance, as a probability of success wake-up, thanks to transmit beamforming. However, false wake-up events — unintentionally waking up non-target devices — have not been thoroughly studied. The paper, therefore, explores the MIMO-assisted WuR approach that leverages Zero-Forcing and Conjugate Beamforming techniques on the Rayleigh Fading channel. Monte-Carlo simulations show that the probability of success wake-up is enhanced while false wake-ups are minimized in single-cell IoT environments. The results are also compared with traditional SISO systems, demonstrating the potential of MIMO systems for WuR technology in IoT cellular networks.
