Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterised by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation due to airway and/or alveolar abnormalities usually caused by significant exposure to noxious particles or gases. Sleep disturbances are often experienced by COPD patients, resulting in poor quality of sleep. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Lucknow amongst 250 COPD patients to assess their quality of sleep using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index tool. A systematic random sampling method was used to select the study participants. Results: COPD patients residing in urban areas have poor quality of sleep as compared to rural residents. Body mass index, area of residence, marital status and socio-economic status have significant relationships with sleep quality of COPD patients. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of poor sleep quality amongst COPD patients. Marital status is significantly associated with the quality of sleep of COPD patients.
