Abstract: 過去30年間における海洋学のブレークスルーの1つは，鉄（Fe）が微量栄養素として植物プランクトン増殖を制御していることが発見されたことである。それにより，海洋におけるFeの役割およびその生物地球化学的動態に関する理解が飛躍的に進んだ。本総説では，北太平洋亜寒帯域におけるFeが一次生産に果たす役割と，北方圏縁辺海を含む自然界のFeや栄養塩の供給プロセスについて，これまで分かってきた知見がどのように積み上げられてきたのかを，世界的な研究動向と比較しながら，我が国で実施されてきたプロジェクトを中心に振り返る。
