Widespread antibiotic heterotolerance in bacteria remains undetected by resistance assays
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Despite global efforts, antimicrobial resistance persists. Mechanisms like heterotolerance further undermine antibiotic effectiveness. Testing > 1000 clinical strains revealed widespread heterotolerance largely missed by conventional MIC-based diagnostics. Since AMR alone does not predict treatment success, new tests and strategies incorporating tolerance data are urgently needed to significantly improve patient outcomes.
