Treatment selection for extensive crown fractures in young teeth using multicriteria analysis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate and prioritize therapeutic options for extensive crown fractures in young permanent teeth using a multicriteria decision-making model. A clinical case involving a 9-year-old girl with fractures in teeth #11 and #21 was used as the basis for the analysis, with the fractures confirmed through clinical and radiographic evaluations. The methodology was implemented using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which allowed the criteria to be weighted and a ranking to be established based on the relevance and effectiveness of each therapeutic option. A panel of experts assessed the relative importance of the criteria and alternatives, producing a final classification that identified endodontic treatment as the most suitable option, given its superiority in preserving functionality, ensuring clinical longevity, and achieving favorable aesthetic outcomes. The analysis highlighted the utility of the AHP model in integrating multiple factors into clinical decision-making and emphasized the necessity of tailoring interventions to the specific characteristics of each case. This systematic framework provides a valuable tool for optimizing treatment selection in pediatric dentistry and has the potential for broader applications in other clinical contexts. Future research should include larger sample sizes to validate and expand upon the findings of this study.
