Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: The objective of this study is to present the theoretical contribution of Jane Jacobs (2014), contrasting it with the current reality in housing complexes of the Minha Casa, Minha Vida Program. Theoretical Framework: Jane Jacobs (2014) advocates the importance of the connection between the built environment and the demands of everyday life so that cities can foster diversity and maintain urban vitality. Method: The methodology is based on dialectics and employs document analysis and field observation. Initially, the main ideas of Jane Jacobs (2014) are presented, followed by a discussion on how housing policies in Brazil, through the PMCMV, have been shaped, using the Residencial Vista Bela in Londrina-PR as a concrete example. Results and Discussion: The results revealed that, the actions of capitalist agents producing urban space, the diversity advocated by Jacobs (2014) is not accessible to the entire population. This results in segregated and standardized spaces, distancing people from their right to experience the city. Research Implications: This study provides a discussion on urban planning and quality of life, demonstrating the challenges of the country's housing policies and the need to break away from established patterns over the years. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by establishing a dialogue between Jane Jacobs’ (2014) principles and the current reality of Brazilian cities. It aims to raise awareness and emphasize the need for urban planning that promotes integrated and dynamic spaces.
