Abstract: Pain is highly prevalent in patients living with cancer for whom opioids are often used as first-line agents when acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are contraindicated or ineffective (National Comprehensive Cancer Network, 2024). The rise in opioid use disorder (OUD) and opioid overdose deaths in the United States during the past 25 years has led to significant changes in opioid prescribing (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024).
