Abstract: Health care is a complex adaptive system nested within and connected to other complex systems. It is dynamic and highly networked with interdependent, heterogeneous agents. These system characteristics are why health care and other complex industries are unpredictable despite our best efforts (Watson & Wilson, 2024). Imagine a tangled pile of different colored yarn or threads. It is difficult to see the start or end of most of the yarn, and there is no apparent order. Picking up one thread will inherently disrupt one or more threads because they are connected.
