Zero reflections of water surface gravity waves induced by a finite periodic array of artificial bars

Abstract: The most significant phenomenon for water surface gravity waves propagating over a Bragg bar field composed of a finite periodic array of artificial bars is the Bragg resonance. However, there are also many zero reflections; this fact means that the Bragg bar field is transparent to incident waves and loses its ability to block water waves. Hence, it is meaningful to study the zero reflection phenomenon of Bragg resonance, either from the physical perspective of understanding the Bragg resonance phenomenon and its underlying mechanism, or from the perspective of the potential engineering application of Bragg breakwaters in coastal protection. In this paper, for water surface gravity waves propagating over a finite periodic array of widely spaced parabolic, rectified cosinoidal, semicircular, and trapezoidal bars, zero reflections are studied, including their classification, their total number between any two adjacent Bragg resonance peaks, and their specific distribution (i.e., the frequency of occurrence). Clearly, the present study enriches our understanding of Bragg resonance reflection and zero reflection excited by a finite periodic array of artificial bars.
