Prevalence of venous thromboembolism in children following high tibial osteotomy for Blount's disease

Abstract: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) in the paediatric population is performed due to the prevalence of limb malalignment. This procedure can be associated with significant complications operatively. The purpose of the study was to determine the incidence of postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the paediatric population post-HTO due to Blount's disease. We conducted a retrospective study on the paediatric population with Blount's disease who underwent HTO between 2021 and 2023. The inclusion criteria included paediatric populations younger than 18 years old with a high tibial osteotomy for Blount's disease and a postoperative plaster of Paris long cast. A total of 55 cases of patients who underwent high tibial osteotomy for Blount's disease were reviewed from our medical records. The majority of cases were female, with 60 % involving bilateral Blount's disease that underwent surgical intervention. Stages IV and V of Langenskiold were predominant in the operated group. All patients had a tourniquet used intraoperatively. The incidence of VTEs after HTO in Blount's disease is relatively low.
