35 Syringe driver compatibilities – what are we searching for?

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Background The Palliative Adult Network Guidelines (PANG) was last published in its 4th edition in 2016. A collaborative process between 8 cancer networks and over 79 individuals. PANG had an online and mobile version– https://www.pallcare.info developed by now-retired Dr Ian Back. This included ‘the syringe driver compatibility checker’ which was open access to all and did not require a login or password. Method Collating and analysing the syringe driver compatibility data from June 2003 to Aug 2024 from 224029 searches. Results The top searched syringe driver combinations included: ‘cyclizine with oxycodone’ (2069), ‘midazolam with morphine’(1997) and ‘cyclizine with diamorphine and midazolam’(1818). ‘Midazolam’ (71798) is the most commonly searched medication overall, followed by levomepromazine (47764) and cyclizine (43427). Octreotide (1014) was the single most searched to see what options there are for it to mix with it. Conclusion What is stark is the normality of the medications and combinations being searched/checked. This highlights that the audience to which this resource is helping is checking more common combinations. As of writing, there is no other UK online resource for checking syringe driver compatibilities which is not behind a password. Our suspicion is it is our district nurse colleagues and general practitioners who are intermittently involved in palliative care rather than palliative care specialists are the primary users of this resource. Therefore it highlights the importance of maintaining and advertising this open-access resource as it facilitates good generalist palliative care for all.
