Experimental and numerical study of the flexural behavior of SCS beams with two-end welding C-shape connectors and reactive powder concrete core

Abstract: Steel-concrete-steel sandwich structure (SCS) is composed of one concrete core and two steel face plates connected to each other by mechanical shear connectors. One of accessible mechanical connectors is channel or C-shape shear connectors. One disadvantage of channel in SCS sandwich structure is the inaccessibility of the layers to weld two ends. In the present research, it is proposed to use complete weld at one end and slot weld at the other end to provide two-end welding of channels to steel face plates. To study the flexural behavior of SCS beams with the proposed structure, 8 experimental samples of SCS beam were made including one sample with ordinary concrete core and 7 samples with Reactive Powder Concrete Core (RPC) with different contents of steel fiber and polypropylene (PP) and four-point bending test was done on them. Also, to check the effect of some parameters, the numerical model was validated based on the results of the experiments. The studies indicated that in the control samples with ordinary concrete and RPC concrete without fibers, the shear failure governs the flexural failure. However, as steel fibers or PP were added, the flexural failure was dominant. Observations showed that with 1% steel fibers or PP in the sample with RPC concrete core, the best energy absorption and final strength are achieved.
