A Significance Structured Review: Feminism Roles in Animation Technology
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Animation technology serves as a potent entertainment platform with the capacity to facilitate sociocognitive learning. Narratives, characters, stereotypes and conflict resolution within animation provide society with reference models. However, the medium's humorous aspect offers a vital space for questioning dominant structures, resisting power dynamics and challenging established norms, although it sometimes reverts to conventional fairy tale tropes that confine the roles and abilities of women. This study employs the PRISMA approach to conduct a systematic literature review, using an advanced search approach and utilizing the Scopus and ERIC databases for data retrieval. The results underscore the efficacy of a postfeminist perspective in exploring gender, race, class and sexuality ideologies with students, advocating for an intersectional approach and a generational lens when addressing systems of inequality. Additionally, the research uncovers noteworthy results concerning expertise in rhetorical genres, the impact of gender and the influence of comics culture on how participants approach their reading habits. By combining eye-tracking technology with stimulated recall interviews, the study reveals the hidden knowledge that participants tap into while engaging with comics. In conclusion, this review emphasizes the dynamic role of feminism within animation technology. While animation perpetuates stereotypes, it also serves as a realm for challenging and reshaping societal norms. Adopting a postfeminist lens offers a promising avenue for fostering critical discussions on various aspects of inequality. This review calls for ongoing research into the impact of animation technology on sociocognitive learning and its potential to reshape contemporary social paradigms.
