Abstract: The coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6 protocols incloud environments through dual-stack deployments presentssignificant security challenges that require careful consideration. While dual-stack implementations offer a practical solution toIPv4 address exhaustion and enable backward compatibility, theyalso introduce an expanded attack surface and increased manage-ment complexity. This paper examines the security implicationsof dual-stack deployments in cloud environments, focusing onprotocol-specific vulnerabilities, security tool disparities, andmanagement challenges. We analyze key security concerns includ-ing IPv6-specific threats such as extension header manipulation,Neighbor Discovery Protocol attacks, and IPsec implementationchallenges in cloud infrastructures. The research demonstratesthat dual-stack environments face unique security challenges dueto the parallel operation of two distinct protocols, each withits own vulnerability landscape. To address these challenges, wepropose comprehensive security best practices including unifiedaccess control policies, advanced threat detection mechanisms, and robust IPv6 address management strategies. Our findingsemphasize the importance of implementing consistent securitymeasures across both protocols while accounting for their distinctcharacteristics. The paper concludes that successful securityimplementation in dual-stack cloud environments requires abalanced approach that addresses both protocol-specific vulner-abilities and the complexities of managing dual protocol stacksin dynamic cloud infrastructures.
