Multi-scale and Multi-perspective Digital Twin: Experience With an Urban Living Lab

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: As global urbanization accelerates, urban areas face significant pressure on service systems. This pressure is compounded by the need to address climate change and mitigate urban vulnerabilities to crises such as pandemics or geopolitical conflicts. To enhance urban resilience and sustainability, Urban Digital Twins (UDTs) have emerged as a promising tool. UDTs, virtual replicas of territories, can integrate complex data from multiple sectors and simulate scenarios to optimize urban and periurban planning decisions. However, their widespread adoption is hindered by some challenges. This paper explores these challenges in the context of a project developing UDT-based predictive and prescriptive services. It discusses the UDT framework being developed and highlights key elements to address the limitations of current model-based approaches, offering insights toward advancing UDTs for improved urban resilience and sustainability.
