Abstract: Oral hygiene is often overlooked in intensive care unit (ICU) settings, yet it plays a crucial role in preventing infections, reducing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), and improving overall patient outcomes. ICU patients, especially those on mechanical ventilation or with limited mobility, are at high risk for oral infections, plaque buildup, and periodontal disease, which can contribute to systemic infections. A collaborative approach involving nurses, dentists, and dental assistants ensures comprehensive oral care in ICU settings. Nurses play a frontline role in implementing oral care protocols, while dentists and dental assistants provide specialized expertise in managing complex dental conditions that may arise during critical care. This article explores the importance of oral hygiene in ICU patients, the specific roles of healthcare providers, and best practices for maintaining oral health to prevent complications and promote patient recovery.
