From Concept to Community: Applying Participatory Action and Universal Design to Create an Inclusive Halloween Event

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the development and outcomes of the “Inclusive Halloween” event, designed using participatory action methods and Universal Design principles to ensure accessibility for individuals with and without disabilities. The event fostered community engagement and celebrated diversity through intentional planning. Surveys administered to attendees and volunteers assessed their experiences. Results showed most attendees were “very satisfied” and valued the event as a judgment-free space that welcomed older children and prioritized inclusivity. Volunteers reported high satisfaction, with many indicating they would like to volunteer again. Volunteers noted the event increased their awareness of disability and accessibility, reinforced the value of inclusive events, and encouraged reflection on broader accessibility efforts. Recommendations are provided for event designers and researchers seeking to enhance inclusivity. This study offers insights into the effectiveness of participatory action and Universal Design in creating meaningful, inclusive events for diverse communities.
