Analysis of the physical-mechanical properties of a photoluminescent mortar added with recycled ground glass

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In this research, the physical-mechanical properties of a white cement mortar (standard mortar) were examined, to which a photoluminescent pigment (strontium aluminate) was added in a proportion of 30% of the cement content and recycled ground glass was also incorporated in different percentages (5%, 10% and 15%) in proportion to the fine aggregate (sand) content. Its properties in hardened state were evaluated, such as: compressive strength, flexural strength, adhesion and luminosity test; as well as the fluidity in fresh state.Preliminary tests such as granulometric analysis, moisture content, aggregate density and absorption, cement density and consistency of the cement paste were carried out to design the mix. The fine aggregate is from the Cunyac quarry and the cement used is white Portland type I cement. The mortars were evaluated at 3, 7 and 28 days of curing. The ground glass was incorporated due to its high mechanical properties; therefore, it was expected that the mechanical properties of the mortar would increase; while the photoluminescent pigment could improve the luminosity. Peruvian Technical Standards (NTP) and international standards (A Spanish Standard (UNE), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Chilean Standard (NCh)) were followed for sample selection, analysis and testing. The results indicated that the photoluminescent mortar added with 15% recycled ground glass, showed the highest compressive strength and adhesion (199.33 Kg/ cm2 and 4.97 Kg/cm2 respectively and the photoluminescent mortar with 5% recycled ground glass, presented the highest flexural strength (73.73 Kg/ cm2 ); which guarantees that the use of this addition would cause greater durability, preventing the formation of cracks and decreasing the interventions in its maintenance; however, there were no significant differences in the luminosity between the photoluminescent mortars elaborated.
