Oppositional language of art: catalan culture and left-wing radical movements (1970–1975)
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the oppositional discourse in Catalan culture during the early 1970s, focusing on the ways it was expressed through artistic practices. Catalan artists, musi-cians, and theater practitioners employed the language of art to circumvent censorship, create an alternative cultural space, and consolidate protest sentiments. Particular attention is giv-en to the Nova Cançó ("New Song") movement, as well as theatrical and visual strategies that contributed to the dissemi-nation of anti-Francoist ideas. The article analyzes the mechanisms of interaction between the artistic and intellectual milieu and left-wing radical movements, including PSUC, MIL, and other organizations. It explores the relationship between political activism and artistic practices, demonstrating how culture became a space of freedom and resistance under the Francoist dictatorship.
