Atpspin: a Microfluidic Approach for Varied Alginate Microfiber Production

Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This study introduces ATPSpin, a microfluidic spinning technology utilizing an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) to enhance the production of alginate fibers. The potential of tissue engineering to replicate the complex structures and functions of human tissues has significantly driven the exploration of various fiber production methods. 1 To date, various methodologies have been investigated, each presenting distinct benefits.Traditional methods like electrospinning, melt spinning, and bio-spinning have been crucial in advancing the field. However, with the ever-evolving needs of the biomedical community, particularly in terms of the integration of delicate biological materials, there has been a shift for more controlled and adaptable fabrication methods.Microfluidic spinning has emerged as a potent alternative, offering gentle conditions and unparalleled precision.2 Nonetheless, current microfluidic techniques face challenges such as rapid clogging during fiber production, primarily due to the instant gelation of alginate with its cross-linker, which remains a significant hurdle in biomaterial manufacturing.3
