Cross-spectral phase method for time delay estimation in acoustic leak detection
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In this paper, a method based on linear segmentation of the cross-spectral phase is proposed for estimating time delays between acoustic/vibration leak signals measured in water distribution systems. The method determines the time delay via linear regression of the cross-spectral phase while excluding non-linearities introduced by noise. A simple and fast approach is developed for automatically detecting linear segments in the cross-spectral phase. Experimental results demonstrate the capability of the method to accurately estimate time delays without first filtering the signals even in the presence of multiplicative noise that distorts the cross-spectral phase, in contrast with generalised cross-correlation and generalised phase spectrum methods. The proposed method provides a confidence interval that indicates the region where the leak is likely to be located, thereby improving the reliability of leak localisation.
