Distúrbios metabólicos na ovinocultura – toxemia da prenhez
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Pregnancy toxemia is a common metabolic disorder in sheep, especially in the final third of gestation, resulting from a negative energy balance. This case report describes the occurrence of the disease in a Santa Inês ewe carrying twins, which presented clinical signs such as apathy, anorexia, recumbency and ketonuria. The diagnosis was confirmed through laboratory and histopathological examinations, revealing severe hypoglycemia and hepatic lipidosis. Despite therapeutic intervention and emergency cesarean section, the animal did not survive. This case highlights the importance of proper nutritional management and early disease detection to prevent high mortality rates and economic losses in sheep farming.
