Abstract: The letter A covers a total of 1,866 DENF entries. There are two classes: patronymic surnames/matronyms of filiation and patronymic surnames/matronyms originating in the common language. The first class holds a share of approximately 66% of the analysed corpus. It includes patronymic surnames/matronyms with phonetic evolution and zero prefix, patronymic surnames/matronyms with phonetic evolution, and suffix and patronymic surnames/matronyms with phonetic evolution and patronymic prefix. The second class represents approximately 34.03%. Due to a mixed subclass, it is possible for the two classes to balance out to half. Around 11% of the corpus includes patronymic prefixation. The reader laughs while reading Fouad LAROUI’s novels. Yet, his writings are far from being comic, they are utterly serious, very serious, in fact; we laugh about serious things! This, paradoxically, raises the question of the laugher himself, with extreme acuteness. This reversed perspective brings us to some essential issues in the work of this author and his conception of art. We shall analyse the novel Une Année chez les Français, focusing essentially on the comic devices and the traces of the irony. We shall unravel the functioning of the text which comes in various layers: from an intuition of the reader which triggers laughter in the beginning, next arousing a cautious laugh, to eventually suspending laughter when the mechanism turns against the reader himself.
